Forgot a gift? What still works today

When a gift is missing and no delivery will arrive in time, three routes remain: buy something digital and print it yourself, write a properly specific voucher, or make something from what you already have. None of them needs shipping. The fastest is a personalized poster as an instant download — at Lumeries the print file reaches your inbox within minutes of purchase and can be printed at home or at a photo counter.

Twelve ideas that need no delivery

Sorted by effort — from five minutes to one evening.

  1. 01

    Personalized poster as a download

    5 minutes

A design carrying names, a date or coordinates that exists only once. Buy the file, print it, put it in a frame. Works for anniversaries, births and milestone birthdays alike.

  2. 02

    A voucher, but specific

    15 minutes

Not “dinner sometime”, but “Saturday, 7pm, I’ll cook the one with the lemons”. A concrete date turns a voucher into a promise.

  3. 03

Photo collage of your shared year

    30 minutes

Twelve pictures, one per month, each with a single line underneath. Free templates are everywhere; the captions are what matter, not the layout.

  4. 04

    A playlist with reasons

    30 minutes

Ten songs, and one line each explaining why it is on there. Printed as a list with a QR code to the playlist, it becomes something people keep.

  5. 05

    A family recipe card

    30 minutes

The dish that was always on your table — typed out, with the story behind it. For grandparents often worth more than anything bought.

  6. 06

The night sky of a date

    5 minutes

Which constellations stood above a place on a given night can be calculated astronomically. As a poster it fits the day you met or a birth.

  7. 07

A letter that is not a birthday card

    1 hour

Not a retrospective, but the things you otherwise leave unsaid. Handwritten. The one gift on this list nobody can copy.

  8. 08

    A frame with a placeholder

    20 minutes

A frame from the shelf holding a printed note: “The photo from our trip in May goes here.” The gift is the plan, not the frame.

  9. 09

    Baking mix in a jar

    30 minutes

Layer the dry ingredients, print the instructions as a label, add a ribbon. Needs nothing but your pantry and a printer.

  10. 10

The moon phase of that day

    5 minutes

The moon looked different on every date. Lumeries calculates the phase for any day between 1900 and 2100 and turns it into a poster with names and date.

  11. 11

A photo strip like from a booth

    20 minutes

Four pictures stacked, printed narrow, glued to card. Fits into any card and costs nothing but paper.

  12. 12

A city map of where it started

    5 minutes

The streets of a city as a graphic map, with date and coordinates. Works for the place you first met as much as for a first shared flat.

Printing it yourself: what actually matters

Four things decide whether it looks like a gift or like an office printout.

  • Paper before printer. An ordinary inkjet is perfectly fine if the paper is right. Matte photo paper at 200 g/m² costs roughly £6–10 for 20 sheets and makes the biggest difference.
  • A4 works at home, A3 and up is worth a photo service. An A3 print costs around £4–6 at a high-street photo counter, A2 about £8–12 — usually ready the same day.
  • Print borderless or leave a deliberate margin. An even white margin of one to two centimetres often looks calmer than a borderless print that sits slightly off.
  • Check the aspect ratio first. Most standard frames are 5:7 or DIN sizes. If the file does not match, the printer crops the edges — on a poster with names that can cost letters.
  • Frames from about £5. A simple wooden frame turns a sheet of paper into a gift. No frame to hand? Two magnetic hanging rails do the job too.

What goes wrong

  • Names spelled wrong. “Sofie” and “Sophie” are two different people — read it twice before printing.
  • Too much text. A poster is read from two metres away. Names and a date are almost always enough.
  • Realising too late that the cartridge is empty. Run a test print before buying a file.
  • Printed on plain copier paper. It buckles as soon as ink hits it, and it looks like it inside a frame.
  • File not checked. With digital purchases the right of withdrawal ends once the download starts — study the preview first.

Frequently asked questions

What can I give if I forgot about it today?

The fastest option is a digital gift you print yourself: a personalized poster, a self-made voucher or a photo collage. At Lumeries the print file arrives within minutes of purchase; printed and framed, a poster is ready in under half an hour.

What paper should I use to print a poster at home?

Matte photo paper between 200 and 250 g/m² gives the best result on an ordinary inkjet printer. Twenty sheets cost roughly £6–10. Standard 80 g/m² copier paper buckles and looks thin even inside a frame.

What does it cost to have a poster printed at a photo service?

An A3 print costs around £4–6 at common high-street services, A2 about £8–12. Many branches print the same day, which makes even a large format possible last minute.

Can I really get a personalized poster immediately?

Yes, if it is sold as a digital file. Lumeries delivers the print file within minutes of payment as a 300 dpi download — there is no shipping and therefore no delivery time. Physical posters usually take one to four working days.

What size should a poster be as a gift?

A4 suits shelves and desks, A3 is the safest choice above sideboards and in hallways. As a rule of thumb, a poster above a piece of furniture should span about two thirds of its width.

Can I return a digital gift?

For digital content the right of withdrawal ends once the download has started — this applies to every provider alike. That is why it pays to study the preview before buying: spelling of names, the date and line breaks.

If it should be a poster

Enter the date, add names, look at the preview. The print file arrives within minutes of purchase — no shipping, no waiting.
